Empires and Traders - Total War is a mod for Rome - Total War that rolls back the vanilla game to start in 549BC. It came from the idea that it would be interesting to play Rome - Total War in this earlier era, while keeping the fundamentals and feel of the vanilla game. The name refers to the great Empires in the east and the empire of Carthage and her parent Phoenicia who were great traders.

The idea was quite appealing because creator comrade_general was able to make the mod by editing text files almost exclusively, with a little graphical work necessary to match faction colors, edit the map, and the like.

A patched version was soon released after the initial release based on suggestions for fixes which included correcting religious buildings for the eastern factions plus adding the unit Immortals to Persia.

After further discussion the mod progressed to another stage which included not only small fixes, but some adjustments to the barbarian factions - namely the addition of Gauls and reduction of starting territories for Germania. The Celtic faction would remain and play a similar role to that of the Greek Colonies; a faction more 'lively' than rebels.

There are two versions available - the first contains the religion and Immortal fixes as version 1.1, the second features the barbarian adjustments with various other small fixes and tweaks as version 1.2
